The 2024 Remembrance Day fixture at Mayfield
The rugby league masters community has a large number of military veterans, so Remembrance Day is the main military calendar event to be commemorated with a fixture.
The 2024 Remembrance Day fixture was the biggest to date, as over 60 military veterans from within the masters community journeyed to Rochdale and made the most of the opportunity to represent all three services in a fixture played in true masters spirit.
Veterans lead Carl Abraham said: “Without certain individuals and organisations these events don’t happen so a special mention goes out to everybody at Rochdale Mayfield for the generous offer in once again hosting the event and first-class services that ensured the occasion got the respect it rightfully deserves.
"Thanks to Rochdale Borough Council, Action Together, Alert Security Training, AJB Management Services, Alexander Khan PLC & Andy Charlesworth for providing funding and finally Stag Sports, Revilo Automotive, C & C Projects, Project Furniture & Direct Flooring & Carpets for their generosity in funding the playing shirts and team wear that our veterans get to proudly don.”
All clothing worn by the veterans is available to purchase via www.stag-sports.com with a small percentage of the sale price going to a military charity. Together, through shirt sales, sponsors, playing fees and generous donations, over £2,000 was raised for the Soldiers League, The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity and The RAF Benevolent Fund & support their amazing work within the Armed Forces community.
The next planned veterans' get-together will be its annual fixture to commemorate Armed Forces Day (June 2025). Planning has already commenced with the veterans committee looking to showcase masters rugby league on the biggest stage, show support to the Armed Forces community and respect poignant military events.
If you’re a veteran or still serving and want to get involved in any of the Masters get togethers, please contact Carl Abraham (veterans lead) on abraham3287@hotmail.co.uk or keep an eye on social media with regular information posted.
