Rochdale v Chesterfield - match preview

Date published: 18 September 2008

Rochdale's rising young star Will Buckley is expected to continue his stint in Rochdale's first team against Chesterfield at Spotland on Saturday (20 September, kick off 3pm).

The 18-year old, who was suffering with tight hamstrings earlier in the week after Dale's draw at Rotherham, should be fit to start and has been in full training in the last two days.

That will be welcome news for manager Keith Hill, who saw Buckley put in a man-of-the-match display of attacking football at the Don Valley Stadium, and scored his first goal in league football in the process.

Hill is expected to name the same side that threw away a two goal lead against Rotherham, with former Dale loan player Reuben Reid scoring an equaliser in the fifth minute of injury time.

Jordan Rhodes impressed on his debut on loan from Ipswich and scored Dale's opener, so he is set to continue up front with Adam Le Fondre.

Hill will be forced into one change on his substitute's bench following Lee Thorpe's sending off in Rotherham game; a red card which saw that marked the start of Dale's capitulation. Thorpe has been given a three match suspension for the two footed tackle which saw him sent off. Jon Shaw could be fit enough to take a place on the bench. Throughout this week the striker has been receiving treatment on a hamstring injury that has kept him out for three weeks.

Dale will be hoping to bounce back from the heartbreak of the Rotherham equaliser in a game which saw them produce their best football of the season to take a two goal lead, only to throw it all away in the dying stages. To do so they will have to overcome a Chesterfield side that are also looking to recover following a 3-0 defeat at Dagenham last weekend. The Spireites had two men sent off in the game so they will have to cope without Lloyd Kerry, who threw a punch, and Robert Page, who committed a professional foul, at Spotland.

Manager Lee Richardson has been quick to replenish his squad's numbers by signing Sheffield Wednesday striker Luke Boden on a month-long loan and are closing in on Portuguese free agent Val Teixeira. The 31-year old is set to sign a four month contract at Saltergate but may not receive international clearance in time to play at Spotland.

Alan Goodall will return to the club that gave him his start in league football. The 26-year old signed for Chesterfield in the summer having played more than 100 games for Rochdale between 2004 and 2007.

The Spireites will be hoping for a repeat of last season's snatch and grab victory at Spotland, when Peter Leven's last minute strike secured the three points for his side.
