Sports for All Community Bank Holiday Indoor Cricket Tournament 2008
Date published: 26 August 2008
Sports For All organised a successful Indoor Cricket Tournament over the Bank Holiday weekend. The event was supported by Kashmir Youth Project, Link For Life and, vitally, by the community organisation’s committed voluntary associates.
This is the sixth consecutive year Sports For All has organised an indoor cricket tournament. Mohammed Nazir of Sports For All commented, “In the past 6 years we have had six different winners. This year the final was a contest between last year’s winners, Bilal legends, and Eastern Magic. It proved to be quite a close challenge. The difference between the two sides was Mohammed Shakir - the player of the tournament. Mohammed collected the winner’s medal, and also received a Player of The Tournament Award for his outstanding contribution.”
Cllr Mohammad Sharif, Rochdale’s Community Cohesion portfolio holder, was also on hand to encourage the tournament. He added: "Sports for All does a first-rate job in persuading young men off the streets – consistently supporting them to express their talents in these events and matches. I recently witnessed SFA organise the International cricket match held in Rochdale, that involved the Kenya national team. Once again, I unreservedly congratulate and thank them for giving up their own time to put together these types of activities for our young people – who we all agree are our future.”
Anjam Rashid, the Chair of KYP, remarked, “We are always happy to support projects that enable our young people in Wardleworth to develop and test their talents against others teams. This weekend our local cricket team finished runners up in SFA’s cricket tournament. We also learnt that our local football team won the football competition. Significantly, all the players and their friends thoroughly enjoy themselves in a spirit of healthy camaraderie. It’s therefore important Kashmir Youth Project continues to encourage voluntary youth initiatives, individual development, genuine teamwork and local talent.”
