Rugby League: Mayfield preview

Date published: 21 June 2019

Mayfield coaching duo Sam Butterworth and Steve Wood are hoping their side performs better than they did at Thornhill last week when they entertain Castleford Lock lane at Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday (22 June).

Although results have not gone Mayfield's way this season the team's performances haven't been too bad but Saturday's showing was by far the worst of the season.

Saturday’s opponents are certainly beatable as last week as they went down at home to Leigh Miners.

Mayfield can take heart from that result and have had a couple of good training sessions this week. With Dec Sheridan back in the fold after his shoulder injury and Jimmy Connaughton back in contention after a bout of illness this has been a positive week for the team.

The teams around Mayfield have tough games with Leigh Miners entertaining fourth placed Egremont, Thornhill hosting Siddal and Kells against Thatto Heath. If results go the right way this could be an important day in the season for Mayfield, but their main objective must be to win.

The NWML side travel to mid table Halton Farnworth in the NWML Premier Division. Halton went down last week to Walney while Mayfield lost to Shevington. It's been a troubled season for the A team so far, but a couple of new signings have meant things are looking up. Also, on the plus side is Andy Reid stepping into the coaching team to add his years of experience. This is a young side playing at a high level and at a very good standard of rugby. The experience gained this season will be invaluable in the seasons to come.
