Opening fixtures in the inaugural Rochdale Rugby League Development Cup

Date published: 29 July 2008

Saturday sees the opening fixtures in the inaugural Rochdale Rugby League Development Cup.

The double header hosted by the newly re-formed Milnrow and Newhey club will see four of our local sides playing off over two consecutive weekends on Firgrove playing fields, starting Saturday 2 August.

Confirmed entrance are Milnrow and Newhey, Mayfield B and Whitworth Spartans. The final wild-card team will come from either the established club Littleborough or from one of new clubs the Bury Broncos or the Rochdale Cobras.

The opening fixture is Milnrow and Newhey V Wild-card Entrant which kicks off at 1.00pm followed by Mayfield B V Whitworth Spartans which has a 3.00pm kick off time.

The event has been given financial backing by the Rochdale Rugby League and as an added boost Milnrow and Newhey have been able to secure sponsorship for their opening fixture from Martin Pickering Builders.

Marvin Connelly of Milnrow and Newhey said "The support from our local league and from Martin Pickering has been a great boost for us and the competition which we are sure will be a great success".

To ensure all the spectators are well cared for Firgrove Working Men’s club are hosting an outside bar and there is also an all day BBQ to sustain all the supporters over the two games!
