Rochdale Swarm break new ground

Date published: 10 July 2008

Rochdale Swarm are set to break new ground in this their inaugural season when they become the first team in the RFL`s Tag Merit League to play in a Tag Rugby Festival in the Republic of Ireland.

The Swarm fly out on the 25 July to Bruff near Limerick to take part in a weekend celebration of Tag Rugby. They’ve contacted the Rugby League`s European Development Officer Kevin Rudd and also the Irish Rugby League as part of their plans.

The Hornets Supporters team, as well as playing in the festival, also hope to play an extra fixture with the Limerick based Treaty City Titans, who are the current Irish Rugby League Champions.

The Swarm’s Emily Wynn was only researching coaching drills for Tag Rugby when she found out about the event and requested some information from an Irish side on any tips they had for Tag. The festival organisers then invited The Swarm to take part in the tournament.

Emily Wynn said: "The Ireland trip is the icing on the cake for us after an incredible first season which has seen us awarded a grant from the National Lottery, three players selected for the Great Britain Tag Rugby League Train on squad, a fixture against the Fijian Association and now an overseas tour. The cost of the trip has come out of the players own pockets and everyone is committed to putting on a good show for the town and our team."

Hornets Commercial Manager Debbie Troops said: "Hornets are very proud that Swarm is involved with this competition it’s a really great opportunity for them and a really wonderful advert for all the hard work that goes into promoting rugby league at all levels in Rochdale. We wish them every success and hope they all have a fantastic time."
