Price stars as Norden progress in the Wood Cup

Date published: 30 May 2016

Michael Price scored a priceless 80 as Norden progressed to the second round of the JW Lees Bitter Wood Cup with a home win over Monton and Weaste on Sunday.

The professional played a solid innings as the trophy holders rattled up 229 for eight.
Monton were dismissed for 171 in reply, Chris Hartley and Nicholas Fairchild each taking three wickets.

Norden won the toss and took first knock. They comfortably made their way to 31 before Rehan Udwadia snicked a Ben Chapman delivery into the hands of keeper Chris Hindle.

Simon North looked on form as he smacked three boundaries in a knock of 21, but he was then trapped leg before by Joshua Lenihan.

Ash Gowers failed to trouble the scorers before he was caught close to the legside boundary, and what had promised to become a big total was looking more like ending in a moderate target.

Steve Pimm was leg before to Lenihan for four and Greg Tattersall was caught behind for a well constructed 19.

Martin Smith was bowled by Christiaan Jonker for 12, and when Price finally fell, bowled by Jonker, Norden were 168 for seven.

Monton’s bowlers were on top, but their attack was blunted by the careful Dave Bebb and the hard hitting Hashum Malik.

Malik scored 32, 28 of those runs coming in boundaries, before he was caught off a skier.
Bebb went on to make an unbeaten 26, helped with a late unbeaten knock of five by Nicholas Fairchild.

Monton had 10 on the board in reply when Hindle was trapped leg before by Malik.

The visitors had plenty of good batting in the shed, but on 33 Price, with his first delivery, took a return catch offered by Jake Sandham.

Ben Chapman looked highly dangerous to Norden hopes, but he was next to go, caught by Gowers for 38 out of the 57 on the board.

This was a big hit for Norden, but they knew that Jonker could change the game if he stayed in for any length of time.

Viljoen was run out for two, and with the total on 113 Jonker had a rush of blood, attacked a delivery from Fairchild and was quickly stumped by Gowers.

Lenihan followed up his good bowling display with a knock of 29, but Monton’s hopes had gone.

Fairchild and Chris Hartley mopped up the tail, and Norden were in the draw for round two which was due to be made by the league at Norden last night.
