Norden win at struggling Middleton

Date published: 30 May 2016

Norden picked up five points from their away match against struggling Middleton on Saturday, but it was a game in which they didn’t have matters all their own way, with some of Middleton’s younger players offering glimpses of a good future.

It was in some ways a strange match, as Norden made their way to 87 without loss, then lost seven wickets for 28, then recovered to finish on 176 for seven.

Middleton’s reply subsided to 88 for eight before Thomas Rutter gave them a twinkle of hope – and a point – with a brilliant knock of 45.

Stags got off to a great start with Michael Price and Rehan Udwadia literally running up the runs with some quick work between the stumps.

Udwadia was bowled for 28 by Ernest Kemm and this signalled an alarming collapse by Norden.

Kemm looked almost unplayable as he spun his way to five wickets.

Price was bowled for 43, Simon North was caught at point for five, Ash Gowers was stumped for 11 after charging Kemm, Dave Bebb was bowled without scoring, Jay Collin was leg before for two, and Hashum Malik was out to a good rolling catch by Rutter for 11.

Norden were 129 for seven, but Greg Tattersall (25 not out) and Martin Smith (26 not out) lifted them to an end total of 176 for seven.

Middleton’s reply was on 12 when Zain Tahir was bowled by Malik, and 15 runs later Kemm was caught by Nicholas Fairchild.

That was really the beginning of the end for Middleton.

Gee was caught by Greg Tattersall, and Yousef was run out when the batsmen found each other at the same end.

Rhys Tierney offered some stubborn resistance, but on 34 he tried to hook a delivery from Chris Hartley and was caught by Fairchild.

The fact Middleton got within 20-odd of Norden was due to Tom Rutter and Mark Buckley.
Buckley scored 22 before falling to a Price catch, while Rutter hit 45 before being last man out, bowled by Price.
