A good season for Littleborough RUFC Thirds

Date published: 20 May 2016

The idea at the start of the season that the Littleborough RUFC Third team would compete at the top of the table would have been laughed at.

The Thirds in previous seasons struggled for numbers and when injuries hit were left short.

This past season the team has had more 18 players for all but five league games and that increase in numbers means a similar side has been consistently fielded.

The team started the season as it meant to go on with victories in the first four games, including two impressive away showings against Duckinfield and Marple.

However, the team was brought back to earth with a thud when they lost the next two games against Village Spartans and North Manchester.

Pre-season there was no real target to win the league, just a hope to grow the team in numbers and enjoy the games. However, after Boro won the next five in a row there was a glimpse of a title shot.

Littleborough entered the New Year right on the coat tails of early pacesetters Village Spartans and Carrington.

Come Mid January and a trip to Village Spartans could have cemented that hope but unfortunately for those of a Boro persuasion, the Spartans got the better of Boro.

Though Boro won six games in a row in April,  including a double over local rivals Oldham, three defeats in March against teams in and around them meant that the gap was too big to close.

The season should still be remembered as a good one given the Thirds enjoyed their highest league finish in the last few years and finished as the best placed club third team in the league.
