Date published: 09 March 2016
Jake Rigby and Tyler Derbyshire both won gold at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Junior National Championship on Sunday (6 March).
The Rochdale youngsters, from Rocha Jiu-Jitsu, took part in the competition along with 500 others at the huge event in Wolverhampton. After fights against tough opponents, 10-year-olds Jake and Tyler took the top medals.
Jake, who was crowned the European Champion a couple of months ago, says he is determined to win more competitions this year and get selected to the UK Youth National Team.
Head coach Kamil Tomaszewski said: “We are extremely proud. Their attitude and consistency have been outstanding since joining our classes. It’s a great achievement for the academy and our coaches.
“We hope that the recent victories of Jake and Tyler will inspire other children from the Rochdale area to join our successful team. Our kids programme offers an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while developing focus, respect, co-ordination and team work.”
