Link4Life Disability session with Salle Angelo Fencing Club

Salle Angelo Fencing Club in Rochdale has recently been successful in securing a grant from Comic Relief which has enabled the club to purchase much needed new fencing clothing and equipment for the expanding junior section.

This equipment has also meant that the club have been able to work in partnership with Link4Life Disability in delivering a fencing taster session.

David Burghley, Head Coach of Salle Angelo said: “We are pleased to have been able to introduce fencing to a number of disabled and non-disabled young people over the last few months.

“This has been made possible because of the grant from Comic Relief which enabled us to purchase the correct safe clothing and equipment in order to deliver the sessions.

“Fencing is a great way to keep both mind and body fit and active and is one of the safest sports to take part in.”

Gemma Hird from Link4Life Disability said: “The session that David delivered went really well. The young people and families were interested in where they can do the club and wanted more information about this. All the children that took part got involved bar two children and all were able to access the session and followed the instructions well.

“Go4it and Link4Life’s disability holiday programme Sunsport have joined forces over the holidays and run a programme for disabled and non-disabled young people from 8-19 year olds.

“The event was run from different venues across the borough but in February half term we had a fencing session delivered by David from Salle Angelo Fencing club at Kingsway Sports Centre and it was received very well. The young people all engaged in the activity and learnt the basic skills of fencing. The families and the young people themselves were asking where they could access fencing outside of the BYCS programme and the staff and David told them about the classes that are delivered across the borough.

“We have booked David on for our Easter programmes and can’t wait to learn more about fencing.”

Established in 2015 Salle Angelo Fencing Club is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and is open to all members of the community no matter what their age, ethnicity, sex or ability.
