Middleton Musical Society invited to make it a choral welcome

Date published: 02 July 2012

Middleton Musical Society (Founded 1772) has been invited to provide a choral welcome home on the jetty to the crew of HMS Middleton when it docks in Portsmouth on Friday, 31 August, after a nine-month tour of minesweeping duty in the Gulf.

Middleton Musical Society was contacted by the Administrative Officer of HMS Middleton with the invitation to help make this homecoming something special.

Musical Director, Graham Marshall says: “We feel privileged to have been asked to perform in this way. I understand that HMS Middleton is affiliated to the town of Middleton, and we wish to respond to such a call to musical duty with eager hearts.

"Not all our members are able to travel with us at that time, but there will be enough of us to give rousing welcome.”

Members of the Society will be travelling down on 30 August.

After receiving the overnight hospitality of the Royal Navy they will be singing “Rule, Britannia!” and other nautical songs as the seamen, disembark and are reunited with their families soon after 10.00am.

HMS Middleton has been operational in the Gulf for the last 3 years and makes up one of the four MCMVs which are present in the Gulf as part of the Royal Navy’s enduring presence East of Suez.
