‘Selfless’ couple honoured with Rotary Community Award

A couple dedicated to the community have been honoured by the Rotary Club of Middleton.

Terry and Sue Smith, of STATUS, have been awarded the 2010/11 Community Award by the club.

STATUS is a charity which works with young people, it was set up by Mr and Mrs Smith in 2007.

Within STATUS the pair set up ‘Nipped in the Bud’ – a project for young people to get involved in planting flowers, herbs and vegetables.

They also run a project called ‘The get Clued Up Project’ – here the young people can look after virtual babies.

Mr and Mrs Smith are active members of numerous groups within the community, they encourage others to get actively involved in community work and they are always there to help and support anyone who needs them.

In her speech on the night of the presentation, Middleton Rotary’s President, Janice Powell said: “The Rotary ethos is ‘Service above Self’ and tonight we are recognising what we consider to be an exceptional demonstration of this within the local community and contrary to the normal way of doing things.”

Mrs Powell added: “We chose Terry and Sue because of the exceptional work they have done with the young people of Langley over a period of more than 20 years. They are both very unassuming and don’t see what they have done as being special, which is very humbling to the rest of us.”

Speaking to the Rotary Club, Mrs Smith said: “Terry was quite overcome.

“Terry has never been recognised for anything that he has done, and he was so happy and proud with the award, and so was I, and I can’t thank you enough.”
