Focus on Middleton: PC Rob Smith

Date published: 11 November 2010

Have you ever wondered why your local police officer decided to join the force, or what they did before they were a police officer, or even what they do when they are not fighting crime?

Well, have no fear, as Rochdale Online reporter Laura Wild caught up with Middleton Police Constable Rob Smith to find out all of the above.

PC Rob Smith, aged 31, joined the police in 2003 following a career change from his previous role as a retail manager.

PC Smith has an NVQ in Retail Level 1, 2 and 3 and studied Health and Social Care at College.

PC Smith explained why he joined the police, and why he loves his job, “I joined the force to make a difference to the community.

“The best thing about my job is the variety of things you do on each day.

“No day is the same and I am constantly busy learning new things each day.”

As with any job there are good and bad days, but for PC Smith there has been one real highlight in his seven years on the job.

“The highlight of my career was detaining a armed robber who had just tried to rob a takeaway. I detained him with the firearm and he was arrested and sent to prison,” said PC Smith.

In his spare time PC Smith enjoys playing football, mountain biking and spending time with his family.
