New Aldi store set for Middleton

Date published: 03 June 2009

Plans for a new Aldi store in Middleton moved a step closer today after a planning application was approved by councillors.

Existing buildings on the Parkfield Industrial Estate on Kemp Street are now set for demolition so that Aldi can move onto the site.

Many local residents were opposed to the development, and 50 people signed a petition claiming that the new store would cause traffic chaos on already over-used roads.

A spokesman for Kirkland Developments, who are behind the plans, said that the plan was to regenerate a site that 'does not reflect well on Middleton'. "We do not want a site in such poor state but is not disturbing residents, and we do not want a really good site that is disturbing residents," he said. "Our intention is not to have to choose between two evils. We intend to have a good facility that will benefit residents rather than hinder them."

A second non-food retail store will also be built adjoining the new Aldi store.

Councillors unanimously approved the planning application.
