Olympic Torch in Heywood

Date published: 22 June 2012

The arrival of the Olympic Torch in Heywood, this Saturday, is to be celebrated with fun and festivities at Veenas Restaurant on York Street.

During the build up to the Torch’s arrival there will be arts & crafts projects to celebrate and welcome the Torch; kids can have fun, make their own ‘torch’ with streamers and get fit with activities provided by Falinge Hub in Rochdale.

Multicultural Arts and Media Centre will be playing the music; Just Poets will be doing a walk-about as they gather material for their Big Olympic-sized poem and barbecued food and kulfi ice cream cones will be on sale.

The event, which was the idea of the Borough’s Multi-Faith Partnership, aims to have a multicultural feel and has been supported by Heywood Township.

The fun will begin at twelve noon at the same time as other events in the centre of town.

The Olympic Torch will be carried along York Street at about 3.00pm when youngsters can wave the torch streamers they have been making, before the flame continues on to Bury.
