Jubilee fun in Queen’s Park
Date published: 04 June 2012
The weather wasn’t kind as grey skies and rain provided the backdrop for Queen’s Park Jubilee Fun Day.
Blustery showers didn’t stop the fun though, and intrepid partygoers were treated to a range of events.
Donated to the town by Queen Victoria in 1879, the park was the perfect setting for a celebration of the monarch.
Those brave enough to face the weather were able to take part in a treasure hunt, a Punch and Judy show and a royal teddy bear's picnic. There was also children’s entertainment, Tai Chi demonstration, tombola and a raffle organised by Heywood Lions Club.
The young Castleton band Moose Patrol headlined the event and impressed with their tight musicianship. Bassist Connor spoke to Rochdale Online before their set. He said: “It’s our first proper outdoor gig. The rain might put people off, but we’ll bring them back!”
Sheila Hill, Chairwoman of Friends of Queen’s Park, said: “So much preparation went into today, it’s just a pity we didn’t get the weather ordered quite right. People have still come down though; we’re used to this weather, aren’t we?!”
The fun day was first in a range of summer events to be held at Heywood’s Queen’s Park.
