Heywood gets ready for 1940s weekend

Date published: 09 August 2011

There’s less than a month to go until this year’s 1940s themed weekend in Heywood.

The event will see the town transformed for a weekend of nostalgia and family fun.

Heywood Business Group has teamed up with Heywood Charities Fete Committee to host the weekend on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 September.

This year’s event is set to be bigger than ever with a variety of events and displays from kitchen and clothing displays to brass bands, street entertainers and charity stalls on the Saturday and a charities fete on the Sunday in Queen’s Park.

As part of the celebrations the organisers are looking for more information on the 35 Maintenance Unit based at Bowlee and various other sites along the Heywood and Middleton boundaries.

A spokesperson for the event, said: “We have some patchy information that the sites were used as a storage facility for aircraft spares and barrage balloons were sited there.

“If any readers could help with further information or what it was like to work at the unit then we’d be interested to hear from you.”
