Date published: 25 October 2010

Wigwam acoustics Ltd is one of the World’s leading sound companies and it is based in Heywood.

Wigwam Acoustics was originally created in 1968 by Mick Spratt and Mike Huck to support a young people’s outreach in Heywood.

In 1979 Wigwam became established as a provider of high quality PA, landing contracts for artists like Brotherhood of Man and Shirley Bassey – today the company is known worldwide and recent projects include the Pope’s Birmingham visit.

Before setting up Wigwam, Mick worked for the BBC as a sound engineer and Mike was a Baptist minister, they were also joined by Chris Hill, Chris had given up mining to retrain as an electrician.

Speaking about the firm and what they do Mick said: “We specialise in hire, sales and installation of professional audio equipment.

“We have been fortunate to work with some amazing venues like Liverpool and the Glasgow Royal Concert Halls but we like to keep our feet on the ground by providing an unrivalled service for our local community projects.”

Mick continued: “Our hire department provides audio equipment worldwide to some of the biggest acts.

“Our regular clients include George Michael, Westlife, The Hollies, Radiohead, Coldplay and Girls Aloud to name just a few.

“Our equipment and engineers are also behind the sound you hear at festivals like the Isle of Wight, Tatton Park and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.”

There have been many pinnacles in the history of Wigwam and its clear the company has been driven down a very successful path by Mick and Chris.

Their insight has influenced the whole audio industry from loudspeaker and mixing console design through to logistics and safety procedures.

Mick said: “The aims of Wigwam are to provide the best service and best people at a fair price to all our customers.”

Mick’s favourite thing about the company is the people, he never dreamt it would be as successful as it has become.

Mick said the best event he has worked at was the Billy Graham ministries, which spanned from 1984 to 2000.

Mick concluded: “The future looks good for Wigwam as we remain at the cutting edge of new technology and we hope to still be at the forefront in another 20 years time.”
