Work has started on Heywood’s long awaited sports, culture and leisure village.
The work began on Monday 15 June. Hoardings have gone up around the site on West Starkey Street and the footpath to the Back O’ Th’ Moss estate has now been diverted.
The £10 million project has been jointly funded by Rochdale Council, New Heart for Heywood, The Football Foundation and Sport England.
The new 'village' is to be managed by Link4Life when it is completed in 2010.
The steering group’s community champion, Alex Gill said: “I welcome the start of the sports, culture and leisure village, which will be a great addition to the town. Let’s hope that that this will help produce even more champions from Heywood for the future.”
Chairman of the village steering group, John Heywood, said; “This heralds a new era for sports and leisure in Heywood, providing a legacy for the next 25 to 30 years.”
