Moves to boost East Lancs Railway
Date published: 09 June 2009
Transport bosses have asked for detailed studies into rail links between Heywood, Bury and Ramsbottom.
Members of Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) are looking at ways to develop the East Lancashire Railway.
A feasibility study is being carried out to identify the best options and the costs, which could be up to £30 million.
In May, the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) agreed to create the Greater Manchester Transport Fund, which will provide £1.54 billion to pay for 15 major transport schemes.
AGMA also identified a further four schemes as priorities, including developing the East Lancashire Railway.
Mark Sanders, chief executive of Bury Council, said: “This is a fabulous project that will mean a great deal for Bury, Rochdale and Rossendale.”
