Unveiling of commemorative plaque on Littleborough Station

Date published: 05 July 2012

The marble plaque which commemorates the opening of the first Manchester to Leeds Railway as far as Littleborough and the subsequent opening of Summit Tunnel has been restored by Kilpatrick's Funeral Services and was formally unveiled today (Thursday 5 July) by Stephen Green, Station Manager Area District West of Northern Rail, at Littleborough railway station.

Opened in 1839, Littleborough Station was the terminus of the line from Manchester until Summit Tunnel was completed and the line into Yorkshire opened in 1841. The opening ceremony was attended by the railway engineer George Stephenson and the plaque was installed in 1951.

The event was organised by Friends of Littleborough Stations who aim to continually improve the facilities and ambience of the station, working in conjunction with Northern Rail, TfGM, Network Rail and Littleborough Historical and Archeological Society who have restored the disused station buildings as Littleborough History Centre.

LHAS provided accommodation and refreshments after the ceremony in the History Centre on Platform 2.

Guests also admired the display in the station waiting room of photographs from Rochdale Photographic Society.
