Focus on Littleborough: Littleborough and District NSPCC

Date published: 26 September 2010

The NSPCC is a national charity with branches all over the country.

In Rochdale it is one of the main charities which people support on a regular basis as people across the borough recognise the need to stop child cruelty and to assist those who have family difficulties.

The Littleborough District of the NSPCC has been active since before the 1960s. The Rochdale Branch is the lead organisation for the three districts of Littleborough, Heywood and Rochdale central. The Committees hold events in their districts to raise money towards these aims.

During the last year to the end of March 2008 the Littleborough District alone raised £9,189.36. In 2009 it raised £10,252.73 and 2010 it raised £15,398.89.

Of course this is not an easy achievement, but various activities have been held to raise the funds including bike rides, a Chester race day, packing bags at Morrison’s, a garden party beauty shows and many more local events.

One of the more unusual events was organised for the Littleborough District by the Tanners Arms Hotel on Whitworth Road Rochdale.

The Tanners Arms have for several years raised money in various ways.

However in 2009 Norman Halsall organised a sponsored head shave in which several of the regulars had all their cherished locks cut off in the interest of raising funds for this great cause.

They raised £1,200 which all went to helping youngsters in the North West

Norman Halsall said: “We were very pleased to help such a good cause and we had a really good sponsor who supported this event.”

The Tanners Arms have since then raised several hundred pounds for the NSPCC.

The current committee of the Littleborough District has several members, who have given years of service, including:
Mrs Eve Edghill (Chairman – 2007)
Mrs Merrilyn Chadwick (Secretary – 1991)
Mrs Jane Leach (Treasurer – 2001)
Mrs Carole Kennedy (2002),
Mrs Lis Kay (past Chairman -1989)
Mrs Janette Heywood (2002)
Mrs Paula Stott (2002)
Mrs Caroline France (2006)
Mrs Ged O’Donnell (2006)
Mrs Karen Anders (2007)
Mrs Audrey Ward (2003)
and from 2010 Miss Sophie Whitehead and Mrs Gillian Fulton.

Each year members of the Littleborough team help Branch Secretary Lis Kay, with a major fund raising event for the NSPCC.

This is called “Ascot at Nutters” and takes place on the same afternoon in June as Ladies Day at Ascot Race Course.

Members of all three Districts form the organising committee and take over the whole of Nutters Restaurant at Norden for the afternoon.

Tickets are limited to 180 and are all sold within three weeks of being released in April each year.

Most Ladies dress up for the occasion. This year Rochdale Online was on hand to take photographs which can be seen on the link:

The net profit this year was over £6,200 which all went to supporting the good work of this valuable charity

The total funds raised by the Rochdale Branch over the last three years was:

Year to 31st March 2008 £26,450.95
Year to 31st March 2009 £32,562.09
Year to 31st March 2010 £34,304.74

Littleborough District and the other two Districts who make up the Rochdale Branch of the NSPCC are always looking for new members to help with this important work and anyone who is interested in helping should telephone Lis Kay on 01706 376775 to get more information.

One of the next important events, not to be missed, is a Soul Night with a 14 piece Soul Band and supper all for £12.50. Not to be missed so call 01706-373438 to order your tickets

Lis Kay from the Littleborough committee said: “The District Committee has a lot of people to thank in Littleborough for hosting events, donating prizes or holding their own events for us. We also support the Littleborough Rushbearing Festival and the Lancashire Night events each year.”
