Focus on Littleborough: TaxAssist Accountants

Date published: 16 September 2010

TaxAssist Accountants has recently opened on Church Street in Littleborough and despite the economic doom and gloom the husband and wife team who run the business have had a very positive start.

Paul and Susan Wareham set up the business after returning from four years working abroad.

The couple had worked in Dubai for three years where Susan was a teacher and Paul was a financial director, soon after the pair headed to Switzerland to work but, decided after just over a year that it was time to come home.

On arriving back in the country they realised the jobs market was incredibly tough, and Paul, a fully qualified accountant with an MBA from Manchester Business School decided the best move was to set up on his own, because he knew he could do it himself.

The couple decided to become a franchise of nationwide accountancy firm TaxAssist and they started the business in March this year.

The pair were desperate to find a property in Littleborough, as they love the friendly feel of the village.

They soon found out that the moment a business property became available it was snapped up so they took the plunge and bought the building which use to house ‘Marcus’ Furniture Shop’ on Church Street.

Whilst the couple were waiting for the final touches to be made to the property they ran from Dane Street in Rochdale.

Speaking about the businesses first few months Mrs Wareham said: “We feel part of a community here and it is such a nice place, everybody knows everybody, people will pop in to say hello or knock on the window and wave as they go past – it is such a nice community place.

“We are most definitely here to stay this is our first shop but we don’t see it as our last, considering the state of the economy and the time of year we have had a very good and enjoyable first few months.”

Mrs Wareham explained one of her husbands strengths was the interest he shows in businesses, ensuring that TaxAssist is able to fit into the friendly atmosphere in Littleborough.

The company covers Littleborough and districts, which includes Wardle, Newhey and Milnrow.

Mrs Wareham does supply teaching in the area so from September she will be having a few days a week out to teach.

However, having her own business is something of a perk, she said: “It is nice to have our own business, it is ours and we can do anything with it.”

The company prides itself on being family ran, however, being part of a franchise, there is a whole support network behind the Warehams which means any queries they have there is somebody at the other end of the phone to help.

So far the couple have found that a lot of there business has come through referrals from other people that are happy with the work they have had done by Mr Wareham.

Mrs Wareham concluded: “We are really enjoying work so far and Littleborough is a great location – we have lots to offer.”
