Rock in the Park

Date published: 09 August 2004

The rock scene continues to command a strong following in Heywood and the Rock in the Park event has long been the jewel in the crown where a rich seam of local bands showcase their talent, and this year's event was exceptional.

The popular event at Queens Park proved a hit with the sun-soaked revellers on a day to remember for young local rock stars 'Fractions'.

Due to a last minute withdrawal by 'August', Fractions, some of whose members are as young as 15, took to the stage and stunned the audience with a set every bit as hard and edgy as their older peers. 18-year-old vocalist and guitarist Graeme said "today is the first time we've played in Heywood and it's been amazing. The crowd are really supportive".

Also amongst the six bands playing the event were Waterfront, a Rawtenstall based Indie band, and one of the most promising bands to come out of the Manchester area for a long time. Waterfront, who tour Germany later in the year, brought a very large fan base with them and boosted an already large crowd.

Another band very well received were local boys 'Lies the Problem' and they clearly met with the approval of Dean Quinn from central Rochdale. Dean also said, "I have been coming here to party for a few years now. The bands are always great, and It's nice to have a mini rock festival so close to home".
