Aldi wants to build a store in Littleborough
Date published: 04 September 2015
The proposed Aldi store will be located on Stockton Street, off Featherstall Road
Discount supermarket Aldi has submitted plans to build a store on Stockton Street, Littleborough.
The site, currently occupied by Carlisle Interconnect, has previously had planning permission granted for a superstore when Tesco applied last year. However, due to Tesco's financial situation, they pulled the plans.
Aldi's plans are for a smaller store so they are confident that the planning application will be approved.
The German retailer plans to build a 1,254 sq m store with 129 parking spaces. They also plan to build a second, smaller, unit on the site which will be let to another retailer. The store will create up to 50 jobs.
Aldi said: "As a foodstore with predominately own labelled brands, Aldi would not compete directly with existing businesses within Littleborough. For instance, it does not have an in store baker, butcher, fishmonger or café and does not sell newspapers, magazines or cigarettes. This allows local businesses to flourish as customers link trips with the Aldi store and other local shops."
Aldi has two stores located in Rochdale and is currently building two more.
