Debate in Parliament on on the closure of Carcraft

Date published: 12 June 2015

Liz McInnes, the Member of Parliament for Heywood & Middleton, secured a debate in Parliament on Wednesday (10 June) on the closure of Carcraft, which was headquartered in Castleton in her constituency.

The debate was held in the Grand Committee Room of Westminster Hall and Ms McInnes was joined by Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk and Kate Green, the MP for Stretford & Urmston, as well as a number of other MPs who represent constituents affected by the closure.

The continued selling of products and services that they would be unable to provide and the poor treatment of staff was of great concern to Ms McInnes, and the other MPs present, and she called on Anna Soubry, the Minister for Small Business, to examine the practices of Carcraft and other companies in similar situations.

Following the debate, Ms McInnes said: “Anna Soubry was sympathetic to the issues raised – both job losses and customers losing out – and did stress that the conduct of the directors of Carcraft would be investigated by the administrators and that if their conduct was found to be unfit, they could be disqualified.”

Ms McInnes said she would now be seeking a meeting with the adminstrators, Grant Thornton, to discuss next steps.
