Manchester Airport is to be transformed in a £1bn programme over the next decade.
Terminal 2 will be expanded, with self-service check-in facilities and a new, enlarged security hall will screen more passengers quicker.
Manchester Airports Group said the investment will mean it "continues to thrive as a national asset".
The work will also include improvements to Terminal 3 as well as create new food and retail outlets.
Manchester Airport plays a vital economic role in the region providing jobs for 20,000 people on site and a further 25,000 indirectly.
Manchester Airports Group is partly owned by Rochdale Council and the other nine Greater Manchester councils.
Last December, Rochdale Council received a windfall in the form of an interim dividend payment of £1 million from the council's 3.22% shareholding in the Manchester Airports Group.
