Township Chairman welcomes Heywood health and community centre

Date published: 23 June 2008

Following news that Heywood has moved a step closer to getting their new health and community centre after the legal documents were signed off on Friday (20 June) Township chairman Alan McCarthy has given his reaction to the news.

Councillor McCarthy has also spoken about the new sports, culture and leisure village, which was given planning permission in February this year.

He said: "I welcome the excellent news about the new health and community centre on behalf of Heywood Residents. This has been a successful Township partnership with the New Deal for Communities/Primary Care Trust in delivering a Joint Service Centre for Heywood through the Labour Government New Deal For Communities Initiative.

"The New Deal for Communities (NDC) project is one of the key elements in the Government’s National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal."

Speaking of the new sports, culture and leisure village, Councillor McCarthy said: "This is an important step in the development of the project. It is expected that, subject to confirmation of funding, the project will be on site by about November this year, and take around a year to build.

"The Village will be built around the existing Jack Talbot Sports Hall, and the Gaskell Swimming Pool will be replaced. However, it is planned that the existing pool will remain in use and will not be demolished until the new pool is complete."
