Siddal Moor students take on the 'Hour of Code'
Date published: 18 December 2014
The 'Hour of Code' is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries across the world.
Anyone anywhere can organise an 'Hour of Code' event and that’s just what the ICT Department at Siddal Moor did.
Students from across Key Stage 3 took part in the 'Hour of Code' within their ICT lessons.
Students aged 11-14 tackled a variety of scenarios and levels of coding, including a 'Frozen' theme where they moved a character across an ice rink creating patterns, that included snowflakes.
Others took on 'Code Monkey' where they had to navigate a monkey around a jungle scene, crossing bridges and other obstacles in order to collect bananas.
Students were able to print out certificates after they had completed the session.
The one-hour introduction to coding is designed to demystify computer science and show that anybody can learn the basics.
Learning to code helps to nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have the foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.
