Springhill Hospice Midnight Walk 2008

Date published: 12 June 2008

Organisers of the Springhill Hospice Midnight Walk 2008 have announced that the latest participant to sign up for the event is ‘Waterloo Road’ and ‘Loose Women’ star, actress Denise Welch. Ms Welch joins the many other ladies who have registered to take part in the event on Saturday 19 July 2008.

The Midnight Walk 2008, sponsored by Jonathan Swire Estate Agents, is a 13 mile, fully marshalled walk, commencing from Middleton Leisure Centre on the stroke of midnight. Alternatively, walkers can do the shorter route of just 6 miles, finishing at Springfield Park where a mini-bus will return them to Middleton.

The full Route takes walkers through Middleton, Rhodes, Bowlee, Hopwood, Heywood, (with a halfway stop at Springfield Park), Sudden, Castleton, Slattocks returning via Middleton Town Centre to the Leisure Centre.

The Midnight Walk once again ties in with Middleton Round Table MiddFest and is supported by Rochdale MBC and the UK Fitness Academy.

Last year the 193 walkers raised a massive £23,000, which proved to be Springhill Hospice’s biggest ever singular fundraising event in their 25 years of fundraising. Pat Harding, Springhill’s Day Hospice Sister, was the oldest member of the Hospice team that took part – but was first home! She said: “The atmosphere was great. People were walking in groups having a good natter and there were marshals all along the route giving encouragement and support. The Police and St John’s Ambulance were in attendance and it all felt very safe despite it being the middle of the night!”

To assist with the operation of this event, Springhill Hospice are also looking for men to get involved as stewards and volunteers – so if husbands, boyfriends or male relatives would like to help out, the organisers would be delighted to hear from you too!

Organisers are hoping that this event could raise enough money to at least cover one week’s costs of around £46,000.
