Fly tipping on Belfield Road angers residents

Date published: 12 November 2014

Fly tipping that is continuing to occur on Belfield Road is angering residents but Rochdale Council says it is unable to simply remove the rubbish as it is on private land.

Local resident Ann Arthur says that she and other residents have been trying to have the area cleaned up for at least two years.

She said: “We have given up reporting this to RMBC as we have been told that the land the rubbish is being dumped on belongs to the residents but the path that runs along side it doesn’t and it is not being maintained by RMBC.”

It is understood that the rubbish is behind Belfield Road.

Councillor Jacqui Beswick, Cabinet Member for Environment and Housing at Rochdale Council, said: “As the rubbish was dumped on private land, we are not able to simply remove it. We have therefore issued the relevant notices to the owners to ensure that they remove it or that we can seek to recover the cost of its removal. We have also arranged for a litter pick to take place around these properties.”
