Lest We Forget – two minute silence observed

Date published: 11 November 2014

The Mayor of Rochdale Carol Wardle, veterans, local councillors and police officers were joined at the Cenotaph at 11am this morning to mark Armistice Day by pupils from Beech House School, shoppers and passers by.

The Town Centre stood still as a two minute silence was observed.

A short service was then led by Reverend Cannon Shackleton.

Prayers were read and the national anthem sung.

The service had added significance as it recognised the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Shannon Ronan who stopped at the Cenotaph for the service said: “I don’t come every year but thought I would come along today with it being the centenary. I think it is important that these services continue because everyone knows someone who has been affected by war. It is important to remember those who have died and who are serving our country.”

Jean Holding attends the service every year, she said: “My dad only saw a few days of the war before being captured so I come to the service every year. I think it’s very important that we continue with these services.”
