‘Mr Littleborough’ Malcolm McCormick dies

Community campaigner, Malcolm McCormick has died. The man dubbed “Mr Littleborough” died on Tuesday (14 October) at the age of 72.

He was well known in Littleborough and was the chairman of the Friends of Hare Hill Park and was an active member of Littleborough Events and Association Forum (LEAF).

He was also a regular attendee of Pennine Township Committee meetings where he would fight Littleborough’s corner. He was known to not be afraid of giving councillors and council officers a grilling.

Mr McCormick, a former greengrocer and a fan of Manchester United Football Club, was a regular at Littleborough Cricket Club where he would join friends watching his football team play on TV.

Simon France, from Littleborough Local, paid tribute to Mr McCormick and said: “I have had the pleasure of knowing Malcolm since I joined LEAF five years ago.  He was incredibly community-spirited and worked his socks off to fight for the good of Littleborough.  Littleborough is a better place because of his dedication and commitment. He will be sorely missed.”

Rochdale Online Director and Chairman of the Pennine Business and Tourism Forum, John Kay said: “Malcolm was a man you could rely on. He said it as it was. No messing around. Littleborough has lost a good man.”

Nick Andrews, Hare Hill House project champion, said: “I have worked with Malcolm for a number of years on a number of different projects. He was integral to the work of Hare Hill House and securing that for the community. He was involved in a number of projects in Littleborough and it is fantastic that he is described as ‘Mr Littleborough’. He will be sadly missed.”

Mr McCormick is survived by his family, including his wife Joan.

The details of his funeral are not currently known.
