Homes evacuated as fire tears through property on on Sheriff Street

Date published: 15 October 2014

Homes were evacuated this morning (Wednesday 15 October) as over 20 firefighters tackled a fire in a terraced house on Sheriff Street, Rochdale.

Crews from Rochdale Fire Station were called to the scene at around 4am where flames were reaching heights of around 50ft high.

It is understood that the fire had spread from the basement of the unoccupied property through the ground floor, first floor and into the attic by the time crews had arrived.

At the height of the blaze, four neighbouring properties were evacuated as a safety precaution and the street was cordoned off.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “The house is a traditional, large terraced property spanning three floors. There was nobody inside and we understand from local people that it is unoccupied presently. By the time we got there it was well alight and we were concerned about neighbours because of the shared roof space. Four adjoining homes were evacuated.”

Three families were allowed back into their homes once the blaze was brought under control.

Those living next door to the property were advised to stay with family as there was a small amount of damage to the attic.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

The house is currently being assessed by local authority building surveyors to check that it is structurally safe.
