Another great year for A Level results at Rochdale Sixth Form College

Students at Rochdale Sixth Form College are celebrating today (Thursday 14 August) after colleting their A level results and achieving a 99% pass rate – above the national average for the third year running.

Hana Barzinji, 18, moved to the UK from Iraq at the age of three and decided to study at Biology, Chemistry, Maths and the Extended Project Qualification at Rochdale Sixth Form College and gained four A* grades. Hana said: “I liked the closeness of the college and the staff were really nice when I came to the open day. That is what really drew me to the college.”

Hana is now heading off to the University of Manchester to study medicine with the hopes of becoming a doctor in the future. “I wanted to do something that helps people and makes a difference to people’s lives. If I can do something that can help people in a significant way then I will be happy,” added Hana.

Calvin Marlor achieved three B grades in his A Levels and is now on his way to becoming a vet. Calvin has been working at Heywood Vets since the age of 14 and has also been a volunteer at the RSPCA for the past year. Calvin will be attending the Royal Veterinary College in London.

“Being a vet is something I have wanted to do since I was young so I am really pleased that I can go on and do that now. I am really pleased with my results and am looking forward to going to London. It will definitely be a new experience for me,” said Calvin.

Jack Wood is heading into full-time employment after accepting an apprenticeship with Sanderson's Floor and Roof Truss. Jack said: “I have been doing the apprenticeship part-time whilst at college and the college were great at arranging my lessons around the work, so that was really helpful. I started full-time a few weeks ago and I really like it.

“There is nothing wrong with going to University and maybe one day I will look at going because I did get good grades but right now I wanted to do the apprenticeship and I really think I made the right choice.”

Iran Ali, 18, was pleased with her results after achieving three A* grades. Iran studied Maths, Further Maths and Physics at the college and is now heading off to the University of Manchester to study Astro Physics. She said: “I really enjoyed physics when I was studying it a college and I like space so going off to do something I enjoyed seemed like the right decision.”

Halima Bibi is also off to the University of Manchester, she is to study Religious Studies after finding a love for the subject at college. Having achieved two A* grades and two A grades Halima hopes to one day teach the subject. “I would like to teach Religious Studies at college one day,” said Halima. “I had such a good experience at the college and really liked my teachers and that has really made me consider doing it as a career in the future.”

Natalie Briggs, 17, who currently teaches gymnastics, was pleased with her results of an A*, B and a C and is heading off to study Sports and Exercise Science at Leeds Metropolitan University. “Sport is always something I have been interested in since I was little and when I was looking at courses, the one I am doing really appealed to me and was one that I was really interested in.”

Iqra Jangir studied Art, Law, English Literature and General Studies at the college and is now heading off to study Law at Manchester Metropolitan University. She said: “I am pleased with my results but I wanted to do a little bit better in Law. I have always wanted to do law as a career and the course I am doing was at a local university which I liked.”

Emily Simms, 18, will be studying Pharmacy at the University of Manchester. She said: “I am rally pleased with my results. Pharmacy is something I have been interested in for a while because it combines both biology and chemistry. I definitely made the right decision by coming to Sixth Form. I would certainly recommend it to everyone.”

Amy Doyle achieved a B and two Cs and is going to Chester University to study Psychology. Amy said: “I developed a love for psychology after doing it at college and hope to one day go on an work in cognitive neuropsychology.”

Megan Skelcher will be heading to university in Wales after being offered a place at Aberystwyth University. Megan will be studying Fine Art and one day hopes to see her name in lights by becoming a world famous artist. “It won’t be easy but I hope to be a world famous artist one day. I have always liked art and it was always the one thing that I would put my head down and get on with so I wanted to turn that into my career,” said Megan.

Julian Appleyard, Principal at Rochdale Sixth Form College, said: “The results today have been fantastic. We are absolutely pleased with our overall pass rate and the results show the dedication of the staff, the students and their parents. It is great when you can see the hard work put in by the students paying off. All of those term days add up to today and it is great to see how well everyone has done.”
