Date published: 13 August 2014

The number of pupils being excluded from schools in the Borough of Rochdale has risen, against the national trend.

1,770 pupils in local schools were given temporary exclusions in 2010/11 across state-funded primary schools, state-funded secondary schools and special schools. This equates to 5.51% of the school population for the area. In 2012/13, 1,420 pupils were given temporary exclusions, equating to 4.37% of the school population.

The figures for permanent exclusions show a slight increase. In 2012/13, 40 pupils were permanently excluded. This is 0.11% of the school population for that year. In 2010/11, 30 pupils were permanently excluded from school. This equates to 0.10% of the school population for that year.

Fewer pupils are being excluded for incidents such as physical abuse of an adult. In 2012/13, 106 pupils were excluded for physical attacks on adults. Whereas in 2011/12, 108 pupils were excluded for physical attacks on adults.
