Luke Thetford and mum helping make their neighbourhood a better place to live

Date published: 12 August 2014

Moorclose mum Pam Mamwell and seven-year-old son Luke Thetford are helping make their neighbourhood a better place to live.

Pam was one of a number of Moorclose, Junction and Baytree residents who trained as community interviewers to collect feedback on people’s priorities for the area as part of the mutual housing provider’s Our Place project.

All of those who carried out the surveys recently gathered at the Community Base to pool the responses and begin to form an action plan.

And while Pam joined her colleagues in providing valuable feedback, Luke played a starring role by constantly updating the group’s wall charts with sticky notes.

RBH’s Our Place project is a key part of its commitment to enabling residents to shape the future of their neighbourhoods.

Pam said: “It’s been really interesting to carry out the interviews with local people and then get together to look at what the overall priorities are.

“I think this is a good way of involving people in their community and, once they see the benefits, more people will want help carry out the action plan.”

Like his mum, Luke was pleased to have done his bit for the community.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed helping today. I like living here and have lots of friends in the area.”

RBH’s Engagement Team will now be working with residents to agree the community’s priorities and produce a plan to tackle them.

Neighbourhoods who have already drawn up their priorities have identified issues such as litter, health and children’s activities.

Engagement Officer Steve Edwards said: “We believe that the people who live and work in a community are best placed to shape its future.

“Projects like this put that belief into practice by giving residents the power to make key decisions.”
