Parliament must be recalled to debate Iraq response, says Simon Danczuk

Date published: 11 August 2014

The ongoing crisis in Iraq means Parliament should be recalled, Simon Danczuk MP for Rochdale has argued.

As the humanitarian crisis worsens in Iraq and Christians (Assyrians and Chaldeans) and Yazidis continue to be slaughtered by Islamic State extremists, Mr Danczuk echoed growing calls by fellow MPs to recall Parliament.

“The situation in Iraq is barbaric and we can’t just sit back and watch these atrocities continue,” he said. “For many people time is running out and they need our help.

My office has had lots of letters about this and it’s clear that people in Rochdale want everything done to avert this terrible humanitarian crisis.

As it stands we will not be able to debate Britain’s response for three weeks. We’ve had two Foreign Office ministers resign in a week and the Government has got to get a grip.”

Mr Danczuk joined a number of MPs, including Boris Johnson, Mike Gapes and Conor Burns, in calling for Parliament to be recalled. Ex army chief Lord Dannatt also backed a recall to Parliament adding that the West could not sit back and watch genocide take place.
