Highfield Hospital staff raise over £350 for Cancer Research UK

Date published: 08 August 2014

A cycle race at BMI The Highfield Hospital in Rochdale has raised over £350 for Cancer Research UK, as part of a national campaign aimed at helping people fight against the UK’s ‘five big killers’.

The Big Health Pledge campaign calls on people to make small changes that will make a big difference to their health and wellbeing.

It targets the UK’s five biggest preventable killers - heart disease, stroke, cancer, lung disease and liver disease – offering help and advice on steps that can be taken to live a healthier life.

At BMI The Highfield Hospital staff organised a series of events including a cycle race which saw staff take it in turns to cycle the longest distance in a minute, a staff quiz, and a restaurant takeover where healthy meals from the Big Health Pledge: Cook Book were served to visitors at the restaurant.

Caroline Stamper, Operations Manager at BMI The Highfield Hospital, said: “It was great to see so many people taking part. We wanted to show that looking after your health can be fun, and the staff certainly enjoyed themselves during the cycle race.

“The healthy dishes served in the restaurant were delicious, so hopefully it will get people thinking about how they could eat healthily, be more active, quit smoking, drink less alcohol and be more health aware – all steps to a healthier, happier life.”

Also on sale at the hospital was the Big Health Pledge: Cook Book which features recipes from chefs throughout BMI Healthcare’s network of hospitals in the UK. The cook book is also on sale in local Cancer Research UK charity shops.
