Littleborough resident looking for help after her car was damaged

Date published: 06 August 2014

Rachel Davies, a Littleborough resident, is asking for people who were travelling along the M62 motorway near to junction 21 on Saturday 26 July to get in touch if they witnessed a large triangle metal sign hit her car.

Rachel was travelling in the middle lane of the motorway at approximately 11.30am – 12pm when a sign came off of the truck and hit her windscreen. The sign then fell down the bonnet of the car and got stuck under the car.

Rachel managed to get to the hard should before any more damage could be done.

She said: “When I got to the hard shoulder I found the sign and alerted a traffic officer who came over to me. He saw the sign and just flung it into the grass verge and told me I’d be ok to get on my way.”

At the time of the incident, Rachel was in the car with her three young children travelling to Blackpool.

“Luckily no one was hurt or anything but it was a shock and a surprise to see this happen. I was under the impression that a load on a van had to be secure and safe, especially if you’re going at considerable speed on the motorway,” added Rachel.

Rachel is now trying to find anyone who may have witnessed what happened as she has been told by the police that there is nothing they can do without a registration number.

She added: “I contacted the police but was told I needed the vehicle registration plate and to be honest, that was the last thing I was looking for when the sign hit my window. I needed to get off the road. The motorway was busy though, so someone must have seen something.”

Fortunately for Rachel the sign didn’t cause a lot of damage to her car and mainly scratched the bonnet and the bumper as it fell down the car.

A spokesperson for the Highways Agency said: “We share concern with this lady and drivers using the motorway should check that their loads are secure before travelling.

"Our job is to keep drivers safe and that is something we endeavour to do.

"It is a criminal offence to not secure a load so it was very lucky that there were no injuries as a result of this incident. ”

Anyone who did see anything or did see the registration plate of the van can contact Rochdale Online on 01706 523583 or via news@rochdaleonline.co.uk and information will be passed to Rachel.
