Paul Lister publishes his debut novel The Blood Bucket Journal
Date published: 15 July 2014
Paul Lister, a former Roch Valley High School student, is celebrating the publication of his debut novel, The Blood Bucket Journal.
Paul was raised in Newhey in the late 1960s, but moved away as a student and now resides in Jersey, Channel Islands and is the Head of Science at a secondary school.
The Blood Bucket Journal is a fast-paced techno-thriller, set in Northern England in the 1980s. It took Paul over four years to write, edit and re-write the novel.
The novel follows part-time abattoir worker and researcher, Fabio De Sousa, who receives an unsolicited message. Intrigued and flattered, De Sousa begins a flirtatious relationship, but his admirer knows more about his research work than they should.
Paul said: “As a student I worked in the meat industry around Littleborough and Rochdale and I was lucky to be able to draw upon some of these experiences in the novel. The characters in The Blood Bucket Journal are all fictitious, but there’s a flavour of Rochdale grit and humour in many of them.”
Paul names contemporary thriller authors Dan Brown, Tom Holt and Jon Land as his inspiration for writing the novel.
“The task of any suspense novelist is to make the reader turn the page. I hope I have achieved this with The Blood Bucket Journal.”
The novel was published by Rossendale Books on 11 June.
