Rochdale Cemetery being turned into a 'dump'

Date published: 15 July 2014

Concern has been raised by visitors to Rochdale Cemetery that the it is turning into a “dump”.

One visitor noticed that rubble, garden waste and plastic items had been “dumped” at the back of the cemetery close to Red Brook valley.

The visitor said: “There appears to be a new municipal dump located in Rochdale cemetery. Rubble as well as garden waste, plastic items and anything that can be tipped or pushed over the edge into Red Brook valley is there.”

Concern was also raised regarding wildlife in the area and what would happen if this continued to occur. It is understood that owls and woodpeckers can be seen in the area.

Rochdale Council is currently undertaking work at the cemetery and working to clear the area. Mark Widdup, Director of Economy and Environment for Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Immediate action has been taken to remove stone, tree pruning and other items from stored soil in the area of the cemetery above the valley. We are working quickly to reinstate the area to its original condition and have taken steps to prevent this happening again in the future.”
