Mobility scooter scheme a hit for Metrolink

Date published: 14 July 2014

A trial scheme that is allowing mobility scooter users to get around on the Metrolink tram network is already proving a hit with passengers.

Just half way through a six month trial, 32 people have already passed a test and picked up a permit to travel with their approved mobility scooters on Metrolink.

The six month trial scheme was created and launched by Transport for Greater Manchester on 31 March.

It came in direct response to passenger demand and newly released government guidance that, of over 300 types of scooter available, at least 22 models could be accommodated on public transport.

TfGM’s Metrolink Director, Peter Cushing said: “Metrolink is already one of the most accessible transport systems you could hope to use but we’re always looking to make improvements.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with Shopmobility Manchester to launch the trial permit scheme and I hope to see even more people coming on board during this trial.

“I look forward to reporting the positive results to members of the TfGM Committee later this year, when they will make a decision on making the scheme permanent.”

The Metrolink Mobility Scooter permit scheme is open to people who live in Greater Manchester and hold an English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) Disabled Person’s Pass or a TfGM Travel Voucher pass.

Mobility scooters have to meet set conditions, including size and turning circle, for safe use in and around the network in order to qualify for the scheme.
