Recycle for Greater Manchester picked up the prize for Local Authority Innovation at the National Recycling Awards for the Right Stuff, Right Bin campaign - a campaign delivered in partnership with Rochdale Council designed to encourage residents to recycle right in the Newbold area.
Last week the leading names in the recycling and waste management industry gathered at The London Hilton on Park Lane to see who would take home this year's MRW National Recycling Awards. More than 600 of the industry’s leaders gathered to celebrate another successful year.
During bin collections, council crews either left a green ‘Right stuff, Right bin’ tag on bins that contain the correct items, thanking residents for recycling correctly or a red ‘Wrong stuff, Wrong bin’ tag if they recycled incorrectly. This was supported with community door-knocking, events and local advertising.
As a result of the campaign, there was a 61% reduction in the amount of the incorrect items put in the mixed recycling bin and the recycling rate increased by 49%. The campaign also delivered over £20,000 disposal cost savings between September and November 2013.
