Castleton Primary School round-the-world food and football extravaganza
Children at Castleton Primary School were treated to a round-the-world food and football extravaganza recently, with a week-long celebration of global cuisine in honour of the World Cup.
Pupils sampled a selection of food from a different nation each day, including southern-fried chicken from the USA, paella from Spain, a Brazilian beef stew called ensopadinho de carne, Italian favourites such as spaghetti bolognese and good old English fish’n’chips.
The youngsters were also given a chance to try traditional desserts from each country, including American blueberry muffins, Brazilian banana cake, long doughnuts called churros from Spain, Neapolitan ice cream from Italy and British apple crumble.
Staff at the school decorated the dining hall every day with flags representing the cuisine’s origin, tables were brightened with balloons and flags of every country that has reached the World Cup were on the walls.
Donna Martin, Rochdale Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: “Our facilities management catering team at Castleton always deliver a high quality service that the children and staff appreciate. They really went the extra mile during World Cup Week and I’d like to thank them for using their creativity to give their pupils a proper feast for the senses.”
