Tour de Horse raises £50,000

Date published: 09 July 2014

Over £50,000 has been raised by the Hungry Horse for their charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support following a three-day Tour de Horse challenge.

The Tour saw Hungry Horse’s very own Super Horse towed in a horsebox along a similar route to the British stages of the Tour de France. He began in Leeds on Saturday 5 July and pedalled away on an exercise bike, while travelling down the country before finishing in Essex on Monday.

During the Tour Super Horse stopped off at fourteen nominated pubs, collecting money that had been raised in the area for Macmillan Cancer Support.

In the weeks leading up to the challenge Hungry Horse pubs across the country have been getting involved with fundraising by holding events from fun days to head shaving.

The money raised was then sent to the nearest nominated pub and handed to Super Horse when he passed through.

On Saturday 5 July at around 12pm the Tour visited the Hornet in Rochdale. The pub handed over £3,000 to Super Horse and his team, which helped the chain raise £50,514 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Tour began at the Roundhay in Leeds and visited 14 pubs in total over the three days, ending on the afternoon of Monday 7 July at the Monkhams in Essex where the money raised was donated to Macmillan.

Matt Brown, business unit director for Hungry Horse, said: “The Tour de Horse has been really great fun but has also raised a sizeable amount of money for Macmillan. I would like to thank all the pubs that set up fundraising events and everyone who came along to the nominated pubs to support Super Horse and his team on their journey.”

Rachel Gascoigne, partnership manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “It’s certainly not every day that a Super Horse rides the length and breadth of the country to collect money raised for Macmillan. I’d like to say a huge well done and thanks to all the Hungry Horse pubs in the area who got involved with fundraising! All the money from the Tour de Horse will help Macmillan to ensure that no one faces cancer alone, thank you.”

Greene King is in the third year of its partnership with the leading cancer care charity, and is nearing its goal of raising £1 million through fundraising.
