Strike action will affect schools and public services on Thursday

Date published: 08 July 2014

This Thursday (10 July) a number of trade unions will be taking industrial action and many schools and public services will be affected.

Linda Fisher, Acting Chief Executive at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “As part of a national day of industrial action, staff who are members of the NUT, GMB, UNISON and Unite are taking strike action on Thursday 10 July 2014.

"The council has taken measures to ensure the continuity of services. Whilst it is anticipated there may be a reduced level of service in some areas, essential services will not be affected.

"The council’s contact centre will continue to operate as normal and the majority of buildings and services will be open to the public.

"Households have already been notified of alternative arrangements for affected bin collections.

"Nine libraries will open, seven closed, and the mobile library is running. Thirty-six schools will remain open, 35 will be partially open and 15 closed."

  • All pupils entitled to free school meals will be provided with a packed lunch
  • Public conveniences will be open
  • Face-to-face customer service interviews will still take place in Number One Riverside but not at Heywood or Middleton libraries. However, there will be a Freephone available in Heywood and Middleton to speak to the contact centre. It may take longer for a call to the contact centre to be answered. If the enquiry is a non-emergency the customer may be asked if they be called back the following day
  • There will be no school crossing patrols at Hollin Primary School in Middleton and St John Fisher in Rochdale so parents are responsible for ensuring children get to school safely
  • All cemetery gates will be opened. No cremations or burials have been booked but crematoriums will remain open
  • A coroner’s service will be provided and Register Office service will be open.

Some schools will be affected by strike action. Parents will be informed directly of any closures or disruption by the relevant school.
