Tour De Horse passing through Rochdale

Date published: 04 July 2014

There will be an extra bit of horsepower on show during the Tour de France this year as Hungry Horse carries out its very own Tour de Horse challenge for charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support.

On Saturday 5 July the British stages of the Tour de France begins in Leeds before travelling 548 kilometres down the country and finishing in London two days later.

Following a similar route the Hungry Horse’s very own Super Horse will be towed along in a horse box whilst pedalling away on an exercise bike, collecting money for Macmillan Cancer Support en route.

During the last few weeks Hungry Horse pubs across the country have been getting involved with this fundraising challenge by holding events including car washes, staff in fancy dress, cake baking, jewellery making, teddy sales and sponsored cycling
The money raised will then be sent to the nearest nominated Hungry Horse pub on the Tour de Horse route and handed to Super Horse when he passes through.

On Saturday 5 July at around 12pm the Tour will be visiting The Hornet in Helmsman Lane and the pub is encouraging everyone to come along, enjoy the atmosphere and cheer on Super Horse during this massive challenge.

Andrew and Sharon Hall, managers of The Hornet, said: “We’re really pleased to be one of the nominated pubs on the Tour de Horse. We want to make sure Super Horse gets a big warm welcome and an equally big send off, so we’re asking everyone from the local area to come down and join the fun for this fantastic cause.”

The Tour will visit 14 pubs in total, ending on the afternoon of Monday 7 July at the Monkhams in Essex where the cash grand total will then be donated to Macmillan.
Hungry Horse is owned by the Suffolk-based pub company Greene King, which is in the third year of its partnership with the leading cancer care charity, and is nearing its goal of raising £1 million through fundraising.

Rachel Gascoigne, partnership manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “It’s certainly not every day that a Super Horse rides the length and breadth of the country to collect money raised for Macmillan. I’d like to say a huge well done and thanks to all the Hungry Horse pubs in Rochdale who got involved with fundraising, and wish Super Horse a wheely good ride! All the money from the Tour de Horse will help Macmillan to ensure that no one faces cancer alone, thank you.”
