NCS with The Challenge is coming to Rochdale

Date published: 04 July 2014

This summer 180 young people from Rochdale will take part in National Citizen Service (NCS), powered by The Challenge. The programme is currently underway and will run until the end of September.

NCS is a government funded scheme which brings young people together from different backgrounds and teaches them what it means to be responsible and contribute to their communities.

Whilst on the programme, young people will complete a number of challenges which will develop their teamwork, leadership, communication and social skills.

One of the challenges will see young people build relations with local charities in Rochdale, including Openshaw Resource Centre, African Caribbean Care Group and Venture Arts.

This month, young people will also design and carry out sponsorship and campaign projects as well as take part in social action projects requested by partner charities.

Jordan Hedderman, a student from St Cuthbert’s Business and Enterprise College, has signed up for the programme and said: “I signed up for NCS because it gives me something positive to do with my summer holiday.

"A few of my friends signed up and we’re hoping to learn new skills through the different activities provided.

"With NCS I’ll be attending a sports activities weekend and a week on a university campus.”

In 2014, over 18,000 young people will complete NCS with The Challenge.
